Community Education and TrainingMary Allen, Director of Vision Services, shaking hands with Tekesha Saffold.

The Lighthouse shares its expertise throughout the community so that those who encounter or work with people who are blind or visually impaired know how to interact in the most effective and respectful way.

In-Service Training:
Lighthouse staff will provide presentations and in-service training programs in nursing homes, senior centers, assisted living facilities, and social service agencies. This training often includes role playing in which participants take turns wearing “occluders” to temporarily simulate the experience of a visually impaired person. Skills taught include sighted guide, communication techniques and more.

Presentations are also available for civic groups, businesses or other groups interested in learning about the Lighthouse.

Health Fairs:
The Lighthouse takes part in Health and Information Fairs which is important for visibility, to increase awareness of our services and to make contact with prospective participants and other referring agencies.

Tours:
Tours of the Lighthouse facilities are available for schools, organizations, interested individuals. Please call for an appointment.
